Synopsis

This book was written in the belief that content analysis can provide a better understanding of the goals of English language instruction textbooks and how they help students improve their knowledge of English as a foreign language.

Content analysis of textbooks can be performed in many areas. This book deals mainly with the cultural aspect, which is considered extremely important in English instruction and in developing students’ knowledge and awareness of their culture.

Content analysis requires diligence on the part of the teacher or researcher as well as time, but the work and time invested will enable effective decisions to be made that will benefit teachers and students. The method can also help teachers to select textbooks to best suit their students and the society in which they work.

This book serves as a research framework for English teachers and for teachers in general. The book will help all educators and researchers understand how to analyze and evaluate textbooks from the cultural standpoint that is considered a main axis of teaching.

The book is a study that focuses on analysis of a textbook for teaching English from the cultural aspect. It will help teachers research the role that cross-cultural knowledge plays in students’ understanding and familiarity with English as a foreign language.

Conducting content analysis will help teachers evaluate the textbooks they use to determine to what degree they relate to their students’ culture and to what extent they help students understand it.

The book is divided into five chapters:

Chapter 1 contains a general introduction about culture, research questions, and objectives.

Chapter 2 reviews the literature about the aspect of culture in textbooks and research in this area.

Chapter 3 describes the research methods and the process of analyzing textbooks from the cultural standpoint.

Chapter 4 reviews the research results in relation to the research questions.

Chapter 5 discusses the research results, conclusions, and recommendations for those involved in educational practice.
